Finding The Right Exercise Class

Finding the right type of exercise class can be a challenge. There are the logistics of days and times to be considered, the background or teaching style of the instructor, and then there’s the question of “Will I fit into this class?” Most of the time, I am asked if the class will be too hard so I wanted to share a few tips on how to select the right class as we begin to expand our class offerings.

First and foremost, it’s important to know what your goals are! This is one of the reasons we offer our GETTING STARTED packages. It gives you and us a chance to get to know you, your body, and your goals.

At CONNECT, we work with a large variety of clients – weekend warriors, aspiring young athletes, folks recovering from medical procedures, and people who just want to keep moving. We all have different goals and we are able to take those into consideration when planning classes. Most of the time, the mindful movement practices we teach such as Pilates, CoreAlign, and MOTR, and weight classes are not the only form of exercise folks are getting during the week. Here are a few tips to help you get going.

Tip#1: Think about what you do for exercise now and see if there are any gaps

Do you do a lot of strength training but not a lot of whole body movement work? Are you a walker/hiker/runner but don’t have a strengthening program in place? Are you looking for exercise that encourages movements that are different from your day-to-day routine? The answers to these questions can help you start a conversation with your instructor to help you pick a class that meets your needs.

Tip#2: Communicate with your instructor

It’s important to us to know how you’re feeling both during and after your classes. If the class seems too easy or too hard it’s important to speak up. We are all highly skilled at modifying exercises up or down to meet your body where it’s at. We want you to feel challenged and empowered to adapt exercise to fit you.

Tip 3#: Pick something that is FUN and makes you feel good!

Remember that movement is supposed to be FUN! Finding a class that you can be consistent with, brings a smile to your face, and makes you feel good is the holy grail right? It should be something you look forward to and that you’re sad to miss when you have to.

We are here to help you find a good match. If you don’t see something on the schedule that works for you let us know. Because we invest so much in getting to know our clients, we can often match you with a friend or two and work to get a class that meets your needs!
